Tragedy of Ryan Gibbons Sparks Lifesaving Change in Ontario
Twelve-year-old Ryan Gibbons tragically lost his life to an asthma attack at his Ontario school after being denied access to his inhaler, which was kept locked away in the principal’s office due to school policy.

Despite his mother, Sandra Gibbons, submitting a doctor’s note and persistently advocating for her son to carry his inhaler, school officials refused. Previous spare inhalers she provided were even confiscated. The heartbreaking outcome of this policy failure led Sandra to take action.
Her determined advocacy resulted in the creation and passing of Ryan’s Law, which mandates that students in Ontario schools be allowed to carry their inhalers with medical approval.
A Wake-Up Call About Asthma’s Risks
Ryan’s story shed light on the often-overlooked danger of asthma, a condition that continues to claim more than ten lives per day in the United States alone. While American laws generally allow students to carry asthma medication, some schools still enforce restrictive policies under broad anti-drug regulations.
Today, Ryan’s legacy lives on through legislation that helps ensure children have immediate access to life-saving medication when they need it most a powerful reminder of the importance of policy rooted in compassion and common sense.
