I Found My Late Mother’s Diary and It Made Me Regret My Whole Life

My childhood was overshadowed by my mother’s unyielding obsession with money. Despite having a stable life my father a regional manager, and my mother a nurse her relentless frugality created a constant tension in our home. While my dad and I wanted to indulge in simple joys, she couldn’t shake her need to save, making me resent her deeply.

My father, Henry, was my rock, and his untimely death when I was seventeen left a hole in my heart. With Dad gone, the distance between my mother and me only grew. Things reached a breaking point when she emptied my college fund to cover the bills, and I swore I would never forgive her for it.

Years later, after her passing, I stumbled upon her diary. In its pages, she confessed a truth I hadn’t known—my father had struggled with a hidden gambling addiction. She had been squirreling away money to pay off his debts, even at the cost of my education and her reputation. One entry hit me hard: “I had to drain Cara’s college fund… It was the only way to save the house.”

In that moment, the bitterness that had consumed me for so long melted into regret. She hadn’t been the villain I had imagined. She had been trying to protect me, even if it meant sacrificing her own integrity. My resentment gave way to a deep understanding of the love she had always had for me, masked in a way I couldn’t see back then.
