Bruce Springsteen Criticizes Trump Administration During Tour Kickoff in Manchester

Bruce Springsteen made it clear during the opening night of his latest tour that he has strong feelings about the current state of American politics—particularly regarding former President Donald Trump.

Taking the stage at Co-Op Live in Manchester, England, Springsteen addressed the audience early in the show with a passionate message:
“The mighty E Street Band stands here tonight in defense of the power of music, art, and rock and roll during these challenging times,” he declared. “Back home, the United States—the country I love, the one that has inspired my songs and has stood as a symbol of hope and freedom for over two centuries—is now being led by an administration I believe is corrupt, incompetent, and betraying the country’s core values. Tonight, we call on all those who cherish democracy to raise their voices with us and push back against rising authoritarianism. Let freedom ring.”

Later in the set, Springsteen continued his critique, turning his attention to issues of inequality and injustice.
“In the wealthiest nation on Earth, some of the richest individuals are turning their backs on the world’s most vulnerable children,” he said before performing “My City of Ruins.” “They seem to take a perverse joy in hurting hardworking Americans, dismantling hard-won civil rights, turning their backs on historic allies, and cozying up to dictators instead of standing with people fighting for their liberty.”

Springsteen’s political stance is nothing new. He openly supported Kamala Harris during the last election, opposing Trump and calling him “the most dangerous presidential candidate of my lifetime.”

Reflecting on the current political climate, he added:
“Not since the Civil War has our nation felt so deeply divided—politically, emotionally, and spiritually. But we don’t have to accept this division as our future.”

Famous for songs like “Born in the U.S.A.,” “The River,” and “My Hometown,” Springsteen reaffirmed his commitment to the values he’s championed throughout his career, aligning himself with Democratic leadership and policies that he says reflect the America he’s been singing about for over five decades.
