I couldn’t wait to meet my daughter’s fiancé but the moment I saw him, everything shifted, and I realized this marriage couldn’t go ahead

For more sotries
The day had finally arrived my daughter Kira was bringing her fiancé, Marcus, along with his parents, to our home for dinner. I had pictured this moment countless times, full of excitement and anticipation. But when they arrived and I saw they were Black, I hesitated. I was caught off guard, and it showed. Kira’s curt voice cut through my shock: “Mom, are you going to let us in?”
The meal that followed was awkward and strained. Later that night, I pulled Kira aside and asked why she hadn’t told us sooner. Her response was blunt: “Because I knew you’d act exactly like this.”
Oddly enough, it was Marcus’s mother, Betty, who became an unlikely ally in my discomfort. We exchanged polite smiles and quiet remarks that masked our efforts to subtly derail the couple’s plans planting doubts where we could.
But rather than falling apart, Kira and Marcus only became more united. When they found out what we’d done, their anger was palpable. “If you won’t support us, then don’t come to the wedding,” Marcus said with finality.
The night of the rehearsal, I stood at a distance, watching them laugh and hold each other close. They looked so in love. Betty joined me, and for a moment, we simply stood there in silence two mothers forced to confront our own biases. Their love had endured, despite us. And in that moment, I finally understood: their happiness was what truly mattered.
