René was the first and only man I ever kissed the only man I ever truly loved. Our story began when I was just 12 years old, and he was 38. The age gap between us was significant, but from the very beginning, there was an unexplainable connection that went far beyond the surface.

It all started in 1981, when I was a young girl with big dreams of becoming a singer. René heard a demo of my voice, and something about it moved him so deeply that he made a life-changing decision: he mortgaged his own home to fund my first album. Neither of us could have imagined then how much that one act of faith would shape the rest of our lives.

That moment was the beginning of everything not just my music career, but a bond that would grow into something extraordinary. Long before the fame and fortune, there was just the two of us a shared belief in what was possible and a love that would blossom over time.

Our relationship evolved slowly and with care. What began as mentorship and trust eventually deepened into love. Over the course of 21 unforgettable years of marriage, we built a beautiful life together, raising three children and navigating the highs and lows of both fame and personal struggle. René was my husband, my confidant, my greatest supporter the heart of my world.

When he passed away in January 2016 after bravely fighting cancer, the loss left an emptiness that still lives with me. I haven’t sought out another partner since. Not because I’ve closed my heart, but because my heart still belongs to him.

I feel him with me every single day. In my children’s smiles, in the music I sing, and in the quiet moments when I’m alone. On stage, I still sense his presence — encouraging me, reminding me of all we shared. At night, when I close my eyes, I picture him by my side, just as he always was.

Ours is a love that didn’t end with goodbye. It continues not in the way it once did, but in memory, in spirit, and in the unbreakable bond we formed. In many ways, I’m still his. And he’ll always be mine.
