Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is facing backlash after reportedly shelving a plan that would have displayed tariff-related costs on products sold through Amazon’s Haul platform. The proposed feature aimed to show consumers the financial impact of the Trump administration’s new tariffs—145% on Chinese goods and 10% on imports from other nations by including those costs in product listings.
However, following a direct phone call from former President Donald Trump, who labeled the transparency measure a “hostile and political act,” Amazon announced the initiative would not move forward. The company clarified that the idea was never formally approved for implementation.
The reversal has drawn sharp criticism. Senator Elizabeth Warren questioned whether Bezos received any incentives from Trump in return for dropping the effort, arguing that such transparency would have helped consumers understand the real consequences of U.S. trade policies. Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel also mocked the retreat, quipping that Bezos “folded faster than an Amazon Basics umbrella.”
Despite the uproar, Trump publicly commended Bezos, saying, “Jeff Bezos was very nice. He was terrific. He solved the problem very quickly and he did the right thing. He’s a good guy.” The episode has reignited debate over the influence of political pressure on tech giants and raised fresh concerns about transparency in corporate decision-making.
